Tom Breiding Railroad Town:
  School Assembly Program

     Program Description:
     Singer-songwriter Tom Breiding's unique musical stories of life in the steel mills
     and coal towns of West Virginia and Western Pennsylvania span the last century. With
     his guitar, banjo, and harmonica accompaniment, Tom captivates students while they
     learn about the steel and coal industries, early labor disputes, and various American
     musical genres. A former English teacher, Tom guides students in understanding the
     fundamentals of good writing and then identifies those elements in his original ballads
     and blue collar anthems.

     Language Arts Connections:
     This program reinforces the functionality of language arts lessons, addresses a few
     basic elements of effective story writing, provides concrete examples of steps in the
     writing process, and examines the writer's purpose.

     History and Social Studies Connections:
     With a visual aid this program illustrates the steps of the steel making process,
     introduces students to two of our nation's prominent labor disputes, and explains
     the Ohio Valley region's key role in shaping America.
